Privacy Policy

Last updated: 23 October 2026

joytt is a community for young Nigerians and other African readers. This page explains what we collect, why we collect it, and what you can ask us to do with it. It is written in plain English, not legal theatre.

What we collect

  • Account details: your display name, email address, username and encrypted password when you register.
  • What you post: threads, replies, reactions, reports and anything you choose to upload.
  • Technical data: IP address, browser type, device type, referring page and request time in server access logs. These logs help us keep the site online and stop abuse.
  • Cookies: a login cookie when you sign in, a language/theme preference, and a lite-mode preference. We do not use advertising cookies today.
  • Anonymous posts: if you use Tree Hole, the public post shows a Tree Hole alias. A private audit record links the post to the account that created it so moderators can handle abuse. That record is not shown publicly.

Why we use it

  • To run your account and show your posts.
  • To keep the community safe: spam, scams, harassment and illegal content.
  • To understand whether the site works on slow networks and fix errors.
  • To comply with Nigerian law, including the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 (NDPA), and to respond to valid legal requests.

Who can see it

Your public profile and posts are visible to other visitors. Your email address and password are not public. Only authorised moderators and administrators can see account and audit data. We use hosting, email and security providers to run joytt; they process data on our instructions.

How long we keep it

Account data is kept while your account is open. Server logs are kept for a short operational period, normally no more than 30 days, unless needed for a security investigation. Anonymous audit records are kept while the post exists and for a reasonable moderation period afterwards. You can ask us to delete your account and personal data.

Your choices

You can access, correct or delete your account data, withdraw consent where consent is the basis, object to processing, or ask for a copy. Email hello@joytt.com and tell us what you need. We may need to verify that the account is yours. You can also complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.

Cookies and local storage

We use essential cookies for login and preferences. The lite-mode switch stores a cookie so we can avoid sending images on slow connections. You can clear cookies in your browser at any time; you may need to sign in again.

Children

joytt is not intended for children under 13. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will remove it.

Changes

If this policy changes materially, we will update the date at the top and, where appropriate, tell registered users by email or an on-site notice.

Follows, Tree Hole personas and private messages

When you follow another member, we store that relationship so we can show “Following” and check whether a follow is mutual. Tree Hole uses a stable pseudonym for your account; it is not linked publicly to your normal profile. You can turn Tree Hole follows and messages off in your account settings when those controls are live.

Private messages are visible only to the people in the conversation. They are not public and are excluded from search engines. If a conversation is reported or needed for a safety investigation, authorised moderators may review it. Do not use private messages to share passwords, bank details or anything you would not want a moderator to see in a report.

You can block a conversation at any time. Blocking stops new messages in that thread. We keep message records while the conversation exists and for a reasonable safety period afterwards, then remove or anonymise them.
